Academics - Middle School
The Middle School curriculum includes Language Arts (literature, written expression, grammar, and spelling), Math, Science, Social Studies, Computer Science, and Service Leadership Studies.
Students are grouped homogeneously in classes by ability level, rather than according to standard criteria of age and grade.
Subjects
Language Arts
Every student has a small group Language Arts class. Reading comprehension activities are integrated with written expression skills. Written language is taught using a variety of approaches. Keyboarding and word processing skills are emphasized, as computers are an integral part of the curriculum.
Math
Students are taught in small groups based on areas of need, and are carefully instructed in the language of math, computation, and problem-solving (reasoning). Topics are taught in a specific sequence and combined with daily review. Math is taught using a variety of manipulatives and materials and follows the Virginia Standards of Learning.
Science
The science curriculum focuses on the presentation of thematic units representing the three domains of Science (physical, life, and earth science). Field trips and "hands-on" experiences are emphasized in the curriculum.
Social Studies
Students receive instruction in history, geography, economics, civics, and current events.
Electives
Students take one elective per semester. They choose from art, music, technology, Bible, drama, and journalism/yearbook.
Athletics
At the start of each day, students participate in a morning exercise program. In addition, students participate in an organized PE class one day per week.
Social Skills
Students participate in a 30-minute Social Skills class one day per week. Class activities are designed to reinforce social and academic skills in areas such as critical and creative thinking, ethical decision-making, interpersonal relationships, practical living skills, building self-esteem, and citizenship. Teaching techniques such as role-playing, small group discussions, and hands-on activities are used. Foundations Class Students who have academic gaps, receive daily/weekly individual or small group instruction. The Foundations class is a remedial session in which processing skills are strengthened. Reading (decoding), comprehension, handwriting, spelling, and/or math skills are also taught.
